The main focus of the work for the volunteers is construction and maintenance of the school and other buildings. There is also a chance to teach English on an informal basis.
Our program provides an opportunity for you to work creatively in renovation and construction efforts to upgrade the living standards for all the children at the temple schools. The two temple schools where we are working in these local communities provide housing, food and education to children who may be without any family members to care for them, as well as those whose families cannot afford to take care of them.

This program’s main focus is on construction and renovation work to improve the facade and living facilities of the school. There might also be some opportunities to teach English on an informal basis, help the children in their vegetable garden (for their studies and own consumption) as well as to create activities for the students or arrange workshops for hygiene, cultural exchange, environmental and other important issues. Our main aim, however, is to construct and renovate the temple school grounds so do expect to work long hours under the sun and to get your hands dirty, with the understanding that you are helping to bring smiles to the children along the way!
Reiserute

Singburi - Temple School Construction Effort

Aims & Objectives

The temple school as an institution offers a safe and secure environment for children from underdeveloped areas. Other children come from remote areas of Thailand, where education is non-existent. These children are at the temple school predominately for educational purposes, and will return home during certain periods of the year.

Weekly Schedule & Activities

Introduction Day
Your project starts with an introduction day on the first Monday including a tour of the area surrounding the accommodation, available facilities, cultural "do's and don'ts", safety concerns as well as some basic local language lessons. Your program will continue as usual from Tuesday onward throughout the rest of the week.

Monday to Friday
After breakfast you will leave for the temple school around 09:00. On your first day you will be taken on a tour of the temple school. On site you will be organized into groups depending on the various activities volunteers are interested in and briefed on your tasks by coordinators and school staff. Expect to do heavy work at the temple school for 4-5 hours per day with a lunch break in between. Lunch is always at a nearby road-side restaurant and stops at the local town can be made on the way back to your accommodation.

Additional Activities & Events
Tuesday
Visit the night market in Tha Kham. Taste all types of Thai food, stock up on inexpensive clothing or just soak in the atmosphere of this small town!

Wednesday
Half day of teaching where after lunch we offer a trip into Singburi. You can choose to use the swimming pool, go for a Thai massage or take advantage of a trip to a shopping center. In the evening you will have the option to attend a self-service BBQ for dinner (Thai style, of course!). This is a fantastic opportunity to socialise with all the other participants, eat great food and enjoy some music.

Thursday
There is a trip to a shopping mall, where you can buy any essentials, snacks, ice cream, coffee and western food like pizza.

Evenings & Weekends
During the evenings the volunteers are generally free, and there are no program activities scheduled unless otherwise mentioned. Weekends are always free at the Temple School Construction Effort program. Relax at the Eco House accommodation, take a local taxi into town, expand your sightseeing and visit the many sites in the central provinces or take a bus to Bangkok for the weekend. Our fiendly staff are always there to make your choice easier with advice.

Please note that the volunteer activities and schedule can change at any time based on the needs of the project, local conditions, the weather and unforeseen circumstances.

School Holidays

When confirming your dates, please take note of the long school holidays when this program focuses purely on construction and renovation work as the children are on holiday. In 2020 the school holidays run from March until May, and from October until mid-November.

Mandatory Volunteer Requirements

Minimum age of 18
Basic level of competency in English
Police Clearance Certificate on sign-up

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our volunteer partner in Thailand is based in Singburi. The focus is on experiencing a range of local cultural activities and traditions, as well as joining ongoing volunteer programs where you can give your time and energy for a few hours each day. The projects and activities we have chosen are interchangeable locally, as it is possible to make a positive contribution within a week. The exception to this is teaching where we believe it is most beneficial to yourself and the school if you commit to four weeks and construction, where we recommend a minimum stay of two weeks. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.

Optional Culture Week

This program can also include a Culture Week which is highly recommended but not mandatory - just inform your travel advisor if you wish to include it. This week gives you the opportunity to learn more about Thailand, bond with your fellow volunteers, and immerse in the area and culture. This is your kick start into a new country and way of life!

During the Culture Week, you will learn about Thai culture, get an insight into the language and have a taste of what has made Thai cooking so famous around the world. You will visit Wat Phra Non Jaksi Worovihan temple (famous for containing one of the largest indoor reclining Buddha statues), the ancient capital of Ayutthaya, have monkeys jumping on your head in Lopburi and much more! Moreover, you will get to meet people, take a Thai cooking lesson, learn the basics of the language, and get a first-hand understanding of the Thai way of life. Evenings during the Culture Week and the weekend after are free unless otherwise mentioned.

The purpose of this program is to help you get a reasonable understanding of the manners, norms, and etiquette that is inherent in Thai society. This week is also perfect for you to get to know and bond with other new participants. It is great for those who will be spending a prolonged period in the country, but also for those who have little time and want to experience Thailand at its best. Its emphasis is on educational factors, such as the language, cooking, cultural and historical aspects of Thailand.

It takes 10 to 15 minutes into Singburi by car, where you will find all the amenities you need i.e. internet, shops, swimming pool, hospital, pharmacy, banks and restaurants. There are plenty of trips into Singburi or you can easily take a taxi for 200 baht.

Local (vegetarian) dishes on site, 3 meals a day during weekdays, 2 meals a day during weekends (brunch and dinner). The meals will be typical Thai fare, including plenty of rice dishes. Lunch during the week is always at a nearby road-side restaurant and stops at the local town can be made on the way back to your accommodation. Please inform us of any dietary restrictions or intolerances during your application. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible and accommodating to the local food.

Vær oppmerksom på

Dress Code
Casual, construction-work type clothes are appropriate during your time at the temple school. However, no see-through clothes or low-cut tops are permitted.

Transportation
Our Eco Houses are about 10-15 kilometer from the city, it's a little bit difficult to travel to town by public transportation, but it can be done by local taxi. Our staff can assist you calling a taxi at any time. There are also bicycles available for volunteers to borrow.

Money
There are a number of banks and ATM machines nearby. The nearest one is just about 2 km away at Tha Kham market.

Local SIM Card
We highly recommend buying a cheap local SIM card for your whole time in Thailand for your own personal safety and for easier/cheaper communication with the other participants, staff and family back home. This becomes especially useful if travelling to your project destination by yourself. You can usually get one at the airport for free or at a low cost. You can also receive one at the accommodation on arrival for free.
