The Eswatini Childcare Volunteer Project gives you the opportunity to assist these vulnerable children working with our local staff and community volunteers in a number of different ways; by assisting with pre-school education and facilitating the All Out Africa syllabus of activities, providing meals, helping to guide the children, while giving them care and adult support.

All Out Africa established and supports six Neighbourhood Care Points (NCP’s) in Eswatini each of which hosts between 30 and 80 children. The role of these NCP’s is to provide pre-school education, food, support and guidance to improve the lives of children in their communities. The NCP’s enable these children to remain living with their extended family by providing free education, meals and support to relieve financial pressure on an already stretched family support network. This concept, established by UNICEF, has been a much-needed response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in Eswatini where one in three children are vulnerable. These NCPs provide safe environments within the community for these children to grow and thrive during their early development and offer a foundation for the child’s future education.

Eswatini Childcare Volunteer Project

Volunteer Role

As a volunteer on the Child Care Project, you will be working with existing Neighbourhood Care Points (NCP’s) in the local community. Your role is to assist our local staff and community volunteers with the teaching of the syllabus, which includes maths, reading, writing, arts & craft, storytelling and physical activity. You will also participate in weekly sports days held at the NCP’s and assist with serving breakfast and lunch. Generally, it’s also a great opportunity to bring fun and laughter into the children’s lives.

Some of the activities you will get involved in include:
- Teaching English and Maths and correcting worksheets
- Leading role play and imagination activities
- Designing activities that support the syllabus
- Reading stories & facilitating learning through storytelling
- Giving support and attention to children
- Organising games & sports activities to help them learn through play
- Assisting with preparing and serving meals
- Teaching basic life skills including teeth cleaning and hygiene

*Please note that the activities listed above are based on availability and may vary by season. These are samples of activities that volunteers are likely to participate in.

What Makes a Good Volunteer?

Volunteers need to be flexible and keep an open mind concerning their placements as situations can arise beyond our control which could require you to be placed at a different project than the one you have initially chosen. We will of course always do our utmost to fulfill your initial wishes but do remember that where you are going is quite different from where you are coming and as such one should be prepared for things not always going according to plan.

Volunteering and intercultural travel share a common trait: the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. This program is designed for proactive individuals and groups that are prepared to adapt to the local environment and its current needs. Naturally, the scheduling and activities of our program are subject to change. Alterations in activities are mainly due to changes in local conditions, which we believe is part of what makes overseas programs the interesting adventure and incredible learning experience that they are.

How Long Should I Volunteer?

Our projects range from 1 week up to approx. 30 weeks. Projects have a specified minimum stay, then it’s up to you how long you can commit. In our experience the longer you stay the more you will gain, as your understanding of the project broadens and you take on more responsibilities. Every volunteer will be given a certificate of appreciation at the end of their stay as a symbol of volunteering stay.
